Hi, I'm Josh!

My journey in art began with a love for drawing, first for fun and later as a response to praise for my realistic skills. Despite refining my craft, I saw art as an impractical career and majored in Psychology, eventually choosing to double major in Fine Art. This decision led me to confront my skepticism toward contemporary art; initially dismissive, I was challenged by a patient professor to engage more deeply. Through study and open-minded observation, I found myself moved by abstract works in ways I couldn’t explain, learning to trust the ineffable, emotional experiences art can evoke.

After college, I became a Marriage and Family Therapist while my painting evolved toward abstract expressionism. Surprisingly, I discovered parallels between therapy and abstract art: both require intuition, spontaneity, and honest expression. In painting as in therapy, the process unfolds step by step, guided by imagination and openness rather than strict precision, inviting unexpected meaning and connection.

I hope my art sparks viewers’ imaginations, encouraging them to see beyond what I intended. Influenced by thinkers like Ian McGilchrist, I embrace the intuitive, holistic wisdom of the brain’s right hemisphere, which values symbolism and the unconscious. While I still admire realism, I’m increasingly drawn to a non-literal, conversational approach to both art and faith, believing, as Emily Dickinson suggested, that truth is often best revealed indirectly, and, as Wendell Berry wrote, “The impeded stream is the one that sings.”

The Raw Ingredients

  • Explore the foundation of painting through your surface and materials.

  • Learn the differences between gessoed and raw canvas in texture and absorption.

  • Discover how to choose the surface that best suits your process.

  • Cover acrylics, inks, tools, charcoal, spray bottles, fixatives, and varnishes to work confidently on raw canvas.

 MODULE 3  

36" x 36" Project

  • Explore the structure of prestretched and pregessoed canvas.
  • Learn the pros and cons of working on this accessible surface.
  • Understand how to restretch a canvas after removing it from the frame.
  • Build layers of color while managing tension and flexibility for balanced results.
 MODULE 4 

40" x 66" Unprimed project

  • Go through all the materials and tools needed to build a 66 x 40 inch canvas frame.

  • Learn how to assemble the frame step by step.

  • Use heavy duty stretcher bars and pine strips for cross bracing.

  • Work with essential tools such as a metal square, nail gun, rubber mallet, clamp, and tape measure.

 MODULE 5 

32 x 32 Landscape

  • Stretch a 32 x 32-inch canvas for the final project.

  • Build quick, expressive layers using a wetting agent, greens, blues, and touches of pink to suggest a landscape.

  • Work quickly and intuitively, shaping broad color areas and refining the horizon.

  • Bring together all the techniques from the course to complete your final framed piece with technique, control, and spontaneity.

In this final module, we reflect on everything you’ve learned: the techniques, textures, and concepts that shaped your creative process.
